Jose Rafael Reyes Pabon was born ninety years ago in the small village of Chilcal Bajo, La Union, Nariño. Jose is the eldest of five sons. From a very young age, he decided to dedicate his life to farming. Over a lifetime, he has gained renown in the area for his dedication to continuous improvement in harvesting and processing great coffee.
Jose has seven sons who are continuing to farm, as is traditional in the coffee trade: knowledge and craft passed down from generation to generation.
Jose’s land is now split into two farms: ‘El Potrero’, inherited from his parents, and ‘El Ojo de Agua’, the result of his own lifetime of hard work, caring for the farm and building it into the fantastic producer it is today. This lot from El Ojo de Agua contains two common varietals in the region, Castillo and Colombia. It is made unique by the inclusion of the renowned Geisha variety known for producing incredibly complex and interesting flavours. Geisha is a higher risk variety to grow, as it is more susceptible to disease and crop failure. However, when grown well, Geisha produces flavours in coffee unlike any other.
